Linked Server / Alias

Is there any way I can created a linked server in 2005 and then refer to it
via an alias? The linked server I need to create has a lengthly name plus I
need to specify a port. It would be much easier to simply create a short
alias name for it.
Thanks - Amos.Yes, you can definitely do that. Go under Server Objects -> Linked Servers.
Right click and create new linked server. Where you see "Linked server:" typ
e
a name (alias) in there that you want to use to refer to this linked server.
Then click on Other data source and pick "Microsoft OLE DB for SQL Server" i
f
it's a sql server (or an appropriate provider for other products). Now type
product name infront of Product name (e.g. SQL Server etc.). Then type a
fully qualified name in front of "Data source:" which is server name comma
port number. After that choose appropriate Security, Server Options etc.
