Linked Server Query

When I execute the SQL Statement in the SQL Query Analyzer, I get the result
s
returned in 4 seconds but when I use the same query from a stored procedure
and execute it from SQL Analyzer, it is taking too long about 50-55 seconds.
Am I missing something? I have a join between external and internal table.

SQL Server? (Same security creditials as well?) I.e, log into QA and run
the query then directly below (same window) exectue the proc (same query in
proc right?). You can also compare the execution plans as well for any
visable differences.

only see one of the few databases only on the linked server. How can I see
all the databases of linked server.

Via the linked server you will see your 'default database' objects on that
target database. Although you cannot graphically browse the multiple
databases that you have access to on the target linked server, you will be
able to access those other databases and tables via querying.
When querying the databases on the linked server, make sure to set your ANSI
settings and issue the queries using the 4-part object context:
ex:
USE ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
USE ANSI_WARNINGS ON
GO
SELECT name FROM <LINKEDSERVERNAME>.Northwind.dbo.Customers
Replace <LINKEDSERVERNAME> with the name of the linked server

If you want to use integrated security (windows user) you have to ensure
that security account delegation is enabled (and that's something that
has to be set up in your Active Directory).
You can read more about security account delegation in Books On Line -
look for "Security Account Delegation".

Error:
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server " servername" returned
message "Communication link failure".
Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote
host.
Msg 18452, Level 14, State 1, Line 0
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted
SQL Server connection.
Notes:
The linked server is configured to use the current logins security
context. It does not matter whether I connect to SQL2000 or SQL2005.
I have a case with MS (6 hours on the phone yesterday), but no help
yet. All spn settings are as recommended by Microsoft. The MS engineer
states that SQL is not passing the login as indicated in a capture file
from netcap.
Any help is appreciated.

you use openquery to return the result?

You are connecting to ServerA using Windows Authentication, not a SQL
login. The linked server connection is attempting to pass your SQL
login over to ServerB. You'll have to login to ServerA using a true SQL
login, or setup an explicit user mapping in the linked server definition.

have installed. This fixes the connect strings. You have to edit the
instcat.sql to put in the correct SQL version. This is documented in the
instcat.sql file. This fixed my 2005->2000 linked server problems. Same as

I assume that you are using the latest service packs on both instances?
Previously this error has been the result of a virus checker or firewall
blocking communications or possibly a faulty network. Do you get any command

running on the remote system?
Windows authentication should not require the user to map a linked server
login, but you can run it with the remote server name parameter only to make
sure these are mapped.
You may want to try and check what protocols you are using and try a
different one!

We're using SS2000 SP4 on both servers. We've been running the following
query for 6 months or so. I'm not sure exactly how long it used to take
because the whole job has about 10 queries. But the whole job used to take
about 2 hours. Now this query alone can take 3 hours.

I don't know if it makes any difference but the tblmail_resp table on
server2 has about 8 million rows and the tblzipreassign_new table on server1
has about 2500 rows.
We have the same problem with a couple of other jobs have queries that go
from server1 to server2 and they have slowed down a lot of in some cases run
for over 8 hours before we stop them.
Any ideas?

Linked Server Problem

Folks i've two SQL SERVER, SERVER1 and SERVER2. I am updating a table at SERVER1 by joining a table with SERVER2. The query works fine, but update fails.

UPDATE a
set col1=b.col2
FROM mytable a JOIN SERVER2.mydb.dbo.mytable b ON a.id=b.id
WHERE a.date=getdate()

I get the following error:
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]

Plz advise!You need to start the "Distributed Transaction Coordinator" service on both servers.

Server Z to Server A (all system and user databases) and the old name of
server Z was not retained. Earlier the link between Server Z and Server B was
working fine in both the direstions. The sa login and the password is till
the same.

>|||So you have some query in a DTS ExecuteSQL task. If you take that query and run it from Query
Analyzer it executed OK. But executed from the ExecuteSQL task it fails. If so, you need to look at
the properties if the ExecuteSQL task. Is the servername correctly specified? Login attributes? You
might want to continue this discussion in a DTS group (I'm no DTS expert myself).

We have been able to determine that the error is only generated when we add
a where clause for a text based field. So, if we remove the "AND
(bh.EmployeeNumber in ('123456')) " or use a numeric based field, the query
works correctly. Also, if we run the query from the linked server, the
query works.I still don't know what is causing the error, but i have been able to find a
workaround by using openquery.

Linked Server Problem

Hi,
I have view V-A in database DB-A on server S-A. This View uses a recursive
function that stops when the recursion level is 31.
In the SQL Query analyzer, I can run "select * from V-A" and get back the
results.
I have aserver S-B, in which I have set up link to S-A and DB-A.
When I run "Select * From S-A.DB-A.dbo.V-A" on Server S-B, I get an error
Server: Msg 217, LEvel 16, State 1, Line 1

starts at level as 2 and recurses until the level is 31). This seed level
works fine when called directly from the local server(S-A). Adjusting the
Seed leve lto 3, instead of 2, made the call from the remote server (S-B)
which had a linked reference to S-A work.
It appears that the linking of a server somehow adds a level to the stack.
Wonder if someone from MS can explain what is going on.

linked server permissions

I have a query on a web site that I'm trying to run. I get this error: Access
to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists.
I can run the query as myself (sysadmin). The user that has problems only
has db_datareader and db_datawriter permissions. Does this user need
different permissions?
